Study Guide 1

Vocabulary:

Catalyst
A catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a reaction without being used up.

Enzyme
An enzyme is a protein that catalyzes a chemical reaction.

substrate - substance on which the enzyme acts to produce a modified product
activation energy - energy required for reactants to reach a transition state
endergonic - +G, reaction absorbs energy
exergonic - -G, reaction releases energy
respiration - general process of oxidative breakdown of sugar requiring oxygen and producing carbon dioxide and water
photosynthesis - uses sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into organic molecules (sugars)
ATP, ADP, AMP - ATP —> ADP + Pi
phosphoanhydride bond - The bond between Phosphates in ATP
oxidation - a loss of electrons ; less C-H bonds
reduction - a gain of electrons; more C-H bonds
